Photographer Rachell Smith, who shot our cover and main beauty story for Health & Beauty’s July/August issue, shares her tricks for taking winning sunny snaps
‘I’m not a huge fan of overly posed selfies – I think natural out-takes that you didn’t plan always look better. Choose a good backdrop with colour and interest, but also something that you won’t blend into.’
Power in numbers
‘Getting a group of people all looking the same way and smiling at the same time is hard! So make it more dynamic and ask everyone to do something instead, such as jumping or laughing. That way you create energy and personality – it doesn’t actually matter if they’re not all looking straight on.’
Good enough to eat
‘The key to getting food looking as gorgeous as it tastes is perspective. You need to place your camera high, so you have a bird’s-eye view of the plate – and clear away anything that detracts from the focus.’
‘You’ll have great lighting if it’s sunny, but take landscape shots up a notch by creating a focal point. Choose something that draws your eye into the picture, such as a path, or a boat on the horizon.’
… and action!
‘Capturing movement is tricky, but can be done. Change the setting on your camera to a fast shutter speed, so it takes a series of pictures really quickly.’
