Hit the highlights

Highlighters can be a bit tricky, but with the right texture and technique, a summer glow can be yours

If you prefer a subtle shimmer, mix a few L’Oréal Paris Glow Mon Amour Highlighting Drops in Champagne, £9.99/999 points (15ml), with your foundation for a dewy sheen. The golden tone gives skin a glossy touch, as well as warming the complexion and helping fight sallowness.

For a stronger, beam-like finish, use a highlighting brush and dust the New Too Faced Love Light in Ray Of Light*, £25/2,500 points, over the tops of cheekbones. It can be teamed with a spritz of make-up setting spray, such as Lancôme Fix It Forget It Makeup Setting Mist*, £28/2,800 points (100ml), for a bold look that lasts.

Smooth water-based NYX Professional Makeup A Bit Jelly Gel Illuminator in Luminous*, £12/1,200 points, on the high points of your face (forehead, cheekbones, length of nose and chin) for a lightweight wash of radiance that glistens, even after it dries. Build it up by layering the gel for a high-voltage highlighter.

We love a creamy stick highlighter on shoulders and collarbones: for a sun-kissed shimmer, try Natural Collection Highlighter Stick in Copper* Boots Exclusive £2.49/249 points. Want luminous legs and arms? A highlighting oil, such as Sanctuary Spa Rose Gold Radiance Precious Glow Body Oil Boots Exclusive £14/1,400 points (125ml), is quick, easy and needs no blending.

Wearing a colour that suits your skin tone makes all the difference…

FAIR: Pearlescent, icy-silver tones can add a magical shimmer to an ivory complexion.

MEDIUM/OLIVE: Opt for shades of gold for a flattering, glowing finish.

DEEP: Rose gold or bronze notes will give skin a rich, glossy radiance.

‘Highlighter flatters everyone and glow = a youthful look. What’s not to love? For a subtle luminosity, apply a product such as Bare Minerals Barepro Glow Highlighter*, £23/2,300 points (15ml; available in four shades), before foundation, using the pads of fingers. The warmth of your fingers makes it easier to press into skin, to help you look lit from within.’ Nikki DeRoest, celebrity make-up artist.
