Try it, work it, own it!

Three beauty insiders – beauty writer Abbie, blogger and journalist Ateh and PR and instagrammer Genevieve – prove that with the right products and a sprinkling of sass, anyone can pull off 2018’s spring/summer trends with style

Red lips for summer? Yes, the normally-seen-in-winter trend was spotted at the fashion weeks across all four capitals, where lips were either softened with blurred edges, made matte or amped up with a glossy finish.

Got a summer ‘do’?

Go for glamour, like Abbie, with an extra layer of gloss, as spotted at the Haider Ackermann show. ‘Wait for your lipstick to dry before applying the gloss,’ says make-up artist Dani Guinsberg, who helped create these looks at our shoot. ‘It sets best on a matte texture – carry it in your bag for top-ups.’

Lip liner is a must for a bold finish.

‘I criss-crossed a pencil over Ateh’s Cupid’s bow, then drew along the outer line of her lips,’ explains Dani. ‘Next? Fill in with lipstick and blend with a brush.’

Reluctant about wearing red like Genevieve?

‘Only apply it to the centre of your lips,’ suggests Dani. ‘Then blend it outwards with a cotton bud for a softer, subtler effect.’

Collection Primed & Ready Lip Primer in Neutral, £2.99, 299 points; Boots Lip Brush, £4.50, 450 points; Rimmel The Only 1 Lipstick in 510 Best of the Best, £6.99, 699 points; Johnson’s Cotton Buds, £1.05/105 points (200 buds).

From full-on wings to lower-key lines, it’s time to take that eyeliner out of hibernation and embrace summer’s version of the graphic black flick.

Feeling bold? Team luminous skin with a full-bodied ‘Winehouse wing’, as seen at the Versus show, and here, on Ateh. ‘Use a brush to apply gel liner,’ says Dani. ‘Gels have a stronger pigment, which is key for creating these dense, dramatic shapes.’

For a subtler take on the trend, start the liner from the centre of your eyes – just underneath and above the middle of your pupil – keeping the inner area liner-free, as worn by Genevieve. ‘Finish by stretching the flick just half a centimetre outwards,’ explains Dani. Try using one of the new breed of stamp-on liners (which work exactly as they sound) to keep the flicks symmetrical.

An easy update for spring/summer 2018? Try a reverse cat’s eye, like Abbie’s. This stretches the line along the lower lashes instead of the upper set. ‘It’s a catwalk favourite, yet really easy to copy,’ says Dani. ‘Use a liquid liner rather than a pencil, as it won’t drag on the delicate under-eye skin.’

CYO Matte An Eyelid Matte Eyeshadow in Nothing To It, £3.50, 350 points; No7 Stay Perfect Liquid Eye Liner†  Boots Exclusive £8.50/850 points; Maybelline Total Temptation Mascara, £8.99, 899 points.

Bold, vibrant eye looks were spotted all over the catwalks. They can be surprisingly wearable, too – you just need a flash of confidence to carry them off.

Nervous about wearing vivid shades on your eyes? Like Genevieve, give lids a wash of pink, as seen on the Antonio Marras catwalk. ‘It suits all skin tones,’ Dani assures us. ‘Smooth over the whole eyelid and wing it out to the corners, so the colour finishes just at the tip of your brows.’

For a daytime take on the trend, copy Ateh and slick a bright liner along upper lash lines only, keeping the rest of your eye make-up simple. ‘Apply just one coat of mascara on upper lashes, and pair with a nude lipstick – if you add colour to your lips, you risk looking like a clown!’ says Dani.

Experimenting with colour, such as Abbie’s pop of green? Help intensify the pigment by applying eye primer to your lids first. ‘For Abbie’s look, I began by drawing the shape with an eye pencil, then filled it in with a darker green shadow,’ explains Dani. ‘Lids are left bare to help tone down the drama, making the effect more accessible.’
