The Lip-mas test

From moisturising formulas to party-perfect shades, we’ve put the lippies that promise to fulfil your Christmas wishes on trial

Charlotte, 25

Dilemma: ‘I need a transfer-proof red lipstick that doesn’t end up on my nose (à la Rudolph!).’

Solution: Rimmel London Provocalips in Play With Fire, £7.99/699 points.

Verdict: ‘I’m at the end of my tether with leaving lipstick marks on drinking glasses, so I can’t wait to try this strong, but not silent, lippy with a stay-put top coat. I test it under extreme conditions – a house party with drinks, snacks and, yes, maybe some kissing – and it holds fast.’

Danielle, 30

Dilemma: ‘I don’t usually wear lipstick, but I want to try something new for party season.’

Solution: New Collection Intense Shine Gel Lip Colour in Sicilian Glow, £4.99/499 points.

Verdict: ‘If you’re intimidated by a full-on bright lippy, this is a great option. Because it’s a gel, the colour is subtleand has a nice sheen. This is perfect for me, as I always forget to re-apply and it ends up looking patchy, but that doesn’t happen with this moisturising formula.’

Jo, 27

Dilemma: ‘I’m always in a rush come Christmas, so I don’t have time to spend 10 minutes getting the perfect pout. Help!’

Solution: New CYO Lipstick and Liner Two Clever By Half Lipstick in Big Idea, £5.50/550 points.

Verdict: ‘I rarely have time to stop and eat, never mind apply make-up. But having a lip liner and a matching rounded lipstick bullet all in one means a 20-second top-up in the back of a cab is all I need. The colour is vibrant, glides on with no smudging or mess, and can be worn during the day or at night.’

Sophie, 31

Dilemma: ‘I enjoy experimenting with lip colour and want to amp it up this Christmas.’

Solution: New Smashbox Be Legendary Triple Tone Lipstick in Berry Ombre*, £17.50/1,750 points.

Verdict: ‘This looks a bit scary when I first apply it, but once I blend it in, the slight graduation in colour actually makes my lips look fuller. It isn’t a shade I usually choose – I’ve tried all kinds of reds and coral, but thought purple wouldn’t suit me – yet when I catch sight of my reflection in the mirror I realise I really like it.’

Sarah, 39

Dilemma: ‘I want to wear red lipstick, but every time I try one I feel like my teeth look really yellow.’

Solution: NYX Professional Makeup Full Throttle Lipstick in Firestorm, £6/600 points.

Verdict: ‘I’m surprised by how much I like the matte, velvety texture. It looks modern and doesn’t feel chalky on my lips. The small, angled shape of the bullet makes it really easy to apply straight from the tube without having to faff with a lip brush. Best of all, this is a great pillar box red shade, which doesn’t seem to make my teeth look dull at all.’

Holly, 22

Dilemma: ‘I love matte lipsticks, but find them so drying, especially in winter.’

Solution: L’Oréal Paris Infallible Nudist Lip Paint Matte in Babe-In, £6.99/699 points.

Verdict: ‘This is nothing like your typical matte lipstick. It’s so moisturising and smooth (goodbye, crusty lips), making it comfortable to wear all day. What’s more, it has a lovely floral scent, and the colour is a gorgeous nude shade that’s bang on-trend.’
