Your first barbecue invite has arrived – hurrah! Time to get your legs out of those jeans and into something more sun-worthy. Pasty pins putting you off? Just reach for the fake tan…
PREP ‘The day before, exfoliate all over with a body scrub to remove dead skin, as this helps prevent a patchy finish,’ says James Harknett, expert tanner and global creative consultant at Fake Bake. ‘Then, just before you apply your self-tan, moisturise dry areas, such as knees, feet and elbows, as these tend to absorb more product, which can make them darker.’ So long, mahogany patches.
APPLY First, choose your formula: lotions and oils will moisturise and mousses are fast-drying, while wash-off tans are non-committal (and sprays are best left to the experts!). Tanning mitts make blending a cinch, and help prevent orange palms. Start with long, sweeping motions on your legs, from the ankles upwards, so you don’t crease your tan as you bend over. You can use the residue on the mitt on hands and feet – apply a light sweep for a hint of colour. For a salon-standard finish, wipe nails, palms and brows with a cleansing wipe, then rub moisturiser into your wrists and wait 10 minutes before getting dressed. We like Bondi Sands Liquid Gold Self Tanning Dry-Oil, £14.99/1,499 points (150ml), and St. Tropez Tan Applicator Mitt, £5/500 points.
MAINTAIN The key to a lasting self-tan? ‘Hydration,’ says James. ‘Vaseline Intensive Care Spray Moisturiser Aloe Soothe (£6.59/659 points, 190ml) works like a sealant – it helps stop the top layer of tanned skin flaking off. Apply it daily, especially to areas where clothes can rub away your colour.’
If you’d like to live in vest tops throughout the summer but feel a little self-conscious about the rough, dry skin on your upper arms, don’t despair. Exfoliating little and often is your best route to smoother-looking skin in a hurry.
‘Using an exfoliating body scrub in the shower may help,’ says Rebecca Bennett, skincare expert at Johnson & Johnson. Our favourite is Soap & Glory Sugar Crush Body Scrub Boots Exclusive £8/800 points (300ml). Its combination of macadamia grains, smashed brown sugar and almond oil helps buff away dead skin cells while hydrating at the same time, plus we can’t get enough of the zesty lime fragrance. Rebecca also has this tip: ‘Twice a week, add two tablespoons of mild bath oil to a warm (not hot) bath, then massage a little more oil into your upper arms to help further boost your skin’s radiance.’
Q. ‘Whenever I use fake tan, I seem to get brown dots on my legs. Where am I going wrong?’
A. ‘This can happen if you haven’t left enough time between shaving or waxing and applying fake tan,’ says James. ‘Remove hair at least 48 hours beforehand to help prevent the product from settling in follicles.’ Running a packet of frozen peas over your legs just before application can also help seal pores.
1. NIX BACK BLEMISHES Sweat, suncream and hair products can cause body breakouts, so don’t neglect your back. Use a blemish-fighting product, such as Clinique City Block Purifying Charcoal Clay Mask + Scrub (100ml; see in store or online for details), and lather up with the Boots Bath Brush in Clear, £4/400 points.
2. UPGRADE YOUR MOISTURISER ‘Choose products with glycerine – it attracts moisture to the top layers of skin, where it’s needed,’ advises Rebecca. ‘Oils can also help.’ Try Aveeno Moisturising Creamy Oil, £7.65/765 points (300ml).
3. INVEST IN A BODY BRUSH Skincare pros love body brushing for glowing skin. ‘Do it on dry skin, before you shower,’ says Rebecca. ‘Brush in a circular motion for three minutes.’ Our fave? Ecotools Dry Body Brush, £4.99/499 points.
Bold, vibrant polishes were all over the SS17 catwalks. Yay! Try these hot shades to give feet an instant update:

Q. ‘I feel as though I’m constantly shaving my legs throughout the summer. Is there a (painless) way to keep them hair-free for longer?’
A. ‘When did you last give waxing a go? It’s not as “ouchy” as it used to be,’ says beauty therapist Nichola Joss. ‘New Nair Salon Divine Body Wax Bye Bye Pain Formula, £12.59/ 1,259 points (400g), contains argan oil to care for skin, and will leave it strokeably smooth for up to four weeks.’
After months of being hidden in socks and shoes during winter, are your feet dry and heels scaly? You’re not alone. But a little at-home TLC can have them revived for the big reveal in about a week. Start by whizzing the Scholl Velvet Smooth With Diamond Crystals Extra Coarse Electronic Foot File, £39.99/3,999 points, over your feet to remove any hard, dead skin.
Next, they’ll need moisture. ‘Every night, slather on a foot cream with hydrating ingredients such as urea, which helps reduce dry skin cells,’ adds Sandrine Sylva, Dr. Ceuticals senior account and marketing manager. Dr. Ceuticals Foot Rescue SOS Cream Boots Exclusive £9.99/999 points (100ml), is perfect for the job. ‘Apply generously, then wear socks in bed,’ she says. Toes looking tragic? Rub fresh lemon juice into each nail, then wash off after 10 minutes. And trim following the shape of your toes, to prevent ingrown nails. Time to show off your fancy footwork!
Q. ‘I want to be ready to hit the beach when we get a hot day – but what if I haven’t had a chance to get my bikini line done? Eeek!’
A. ‘No problem – just keep the Veet Sensitive Precision Beauty Styler (£23.99/2,399 points) in your bathroom for such emergencies,’ says A-list grooming guru Arezoo Kaviani. ‘It’s perfect for DIY trimming and shaping between salon visits, and can help prevent those red bumps, too.’
Feeling self-conscious about showing off your legs because of thread veins or stretch marks? Disguise them, fast, by dabbing Vichy Dermablend Total Body Corrective Foundation 16HR, £29.75/2,975 points (100ml), onto any problem areas – blend well and leave to dry for five minutes before getting dressed. There you have it: day-long coverage that won’t rub off on your best skirt!
