Tackle dehydrated skin for a softer, smoother complexion
f you had one beauty wish, what would it be? We’d put money on supple, plumped up, dewy skin. But did you know that dehydrated skin could be standing between you and a youthful-looking complexion?
Dehydrated skin suffers from a lack of water in its outermost layer, which can lead to it becoming inflamed, itchy and sensitive. ‘It also feels tight, rough and dry,’ says Katherine Frizoni, skincare research and development manager at Simple. ‘This leads to visible dullness and fine lines because it’s not plumped up with moisture.’
One of the main causes is the ageing process. Over time, your skin loses its natural hydrators and its ability to regenerate the lipids that strengthen its outer layer declines. Lifestyle plays a big part, too. Even if you’re still a youngster, late nights, alcohol and sun exposure can all take their toll. ‘Air pollution, weather, temperature changes and air-conditioning will also cause your skin’s natural hydration cycle to get out of balance,’ adds Katherine. Interestingly, everyday stress has an impact, too. ‘The stress hormone cortisol can reduce your skin’s ability to retain water.’
Luckily, there are plenty of simple ways to get your glow back. First, drink at least two litres of water a day to feed thirsty skin (after all, your cells are mostly made of water). ‘The right skincare is key, too,’ says Katherine. ‘Avoid products that contain harsh chemicals, and apply moisturiser just after you shower, as this helps keep moisture locked in.’
