Overheard on a beauty shoot

What do you get when you put a team of industry experts together? Some genius insider tips, that’s what! Here are our favourites…

Boost those lashes

‘Dust translucent powder on your lashes between applying coats of mascara – this will help them look thicker and fuller’ Lisa Valencia, make-up artist

TRY New NYX HD Studio Photogenic Finishing Powder in Translucent, £8/800 points

Mix and match for soft locks

Celebrity hairstylist Aaron Carlo likes to concoct a cocktail of products to help him create silky-smooth looks. ‘I combine a hair serum with a mousse,’ he explains. ‘This gives hair a softer finish and makes it easier to blow-dry.’

TRY TRESemmé Expert Beauty-Full Volume Touchable Bounce Mousse, £5.50/550 points (200ml)

Perfect your finish

Nail artist Chisato Yamamoto shares her foolproof solution for a professionally finished manicure: ‘Clean the edges of your nails with a small concealer brush dipped in nail varnish remover before applying your top coat – it’s a quick and easy way
to tidy up any mishaps.’  , £17/1,700 points

TRY Smashbox Precision Concealer Brush No.5, £17/1,700 points

Tame flyaways

I always have an unused toothbrush on set. I spritz it with hairspray, then use it to comb down any annoying baby hairs and cowlicks, so they sit with the rest of the hairline.’ Lee Stafford, hairstylist

TRY Colgate Pro Gum Health Soft Toothbrush, £3/300 points

Create stay-put curls

‘Gently warm your eyelash curlers with a hairdryer before using them. The heat will give your lashes extra lift and help to ensure the curl lasts all day.’ Lisa Valencia

TRY No7 Lift & Curve Eyelash Curler £8/800 points

Layer for shade precision

We’ll definitely be trying this tip from nail technician Adam Slee. ‘When it comes to Fashion Week, I need to get the nail colour just right to ensure I’m within the designer’s palette,’ he says. ‘The answer is layering. I apply several different polishes to create not only the correct shade, but the right tone, too.’

TRY Rimmel London 60 Seconds Super Shine By Rita Ora in Pump Up The Purple, £2.99/299 points (8ml)

Breathe new life into polish

‘Don’t shake the bottle, as this creates air bubbles in the formula, making it thick, gloopy and harder to apply. Instead, roll it between your hands. This mixes the polish and will help it last longer.’ Chisato Yamamoto

TRY Nails Inc Gel Effect, £15/1,500 points (14ml)

Work an age-defying braid

‘Plait two small braids at ear level, then join them together tightly at the back of your head,’ says Aaron Carlo. ‘Disguise the braids under the rest of your hair and your face will appear instantly lifted.’

TRY Invisibobble Nano The Styling Hair Ring in Crystal Clear, £3.95/395 points (3-pack)

Make your mascara last

‘Avoid pumping the wand in and out of the tube before applying mascara – this introduces air into the product, which can make it dry out more quickly.’ Lisa Valencia

Nail the textured look

A tactile finish is the pro way to update a mani in a hurry. ‘I keep eyeshadow palettes in my kit for this,’ says Adam Slee. ‘You simply rub a single shadow shade on top of your polish, then seal it with a top coat, to give a textured effect that’s a little different and fun.’

TRY Rimmel London Glam’Eyes Quad Eye Shadow in State Of Grace, £6.99/699 points

Fix your lipstick for longer

After applying your lipstick, dust a light, translucent powder over your lips to help set the colour in place and ensure it stays put all day.’ Lisa Valencia

TRY Clinique Blended Face Powder & Brush, £23.50/2,350 points

Cheat a French mani

‘I always keep round hole-punch paper shapes in my tool kit, which I use as stencils,’ says Adam Slee. ‘They’re handy when I’m applying either a French manicure tip or a half moon at the base of the nail.’

Clean before colour

‘Even if your nails are bare, always buff them with a cotton pad soaked in nail varnish remover before applying a polish,’ advises Chisato Yamamoto. ‘Nail artists call this stage “squeaking” because it removes any dirt, dust and oil, which can make your polish chip or bubble.’ Noted!

TRY Sally Hansen Regular Polish Remover, £2.45/245 points (200ml)

Banish hair dents

Andrew Jose shares a quick-fix tip: ‘If you’ve blow-dried your hair but need to clip it back to apply your make-up, pop a playing card between the clip to prevent those annoying creases.’

Plait with a twist

‘Before braiding hair, I always lightly coat my hands with a shine spray. The sections slide through your hands more easily and it gives the look an amazing sheen.’ Aaron Carlo

TRY TRESemmé Get Sleek Protect and Polish Duo Mist, £5.78/578 points (200ml)

Wake up make-up

Foundation can look dry and chalky when it’s been on the skin for a while, but Lisa Valencia has the solution: ‘Using a make-up brush, apply a small amount of illuminating primer over your foundation, paying attention to areas that look a little tired. It will refresh your whole face.’

TRY Lancôme La Base Pro Hydra Glow Primer, £28.50/2,850 points (25ml)
