Wear your age with pride!

Look yourself – only better (with a little help from the experts)

I

f you’ve ever looked at the face staring back at you in the mirror and tried lifting your forehead in an attempt to smooth out the wrinkles, stop – there has been a shift in the way we view ageing. The plumped-up, ageless Hollywood look is being replaced by women – both on the red carpet and in beauty advertising campaigns – who are no longer afraid to actually appear their age. Yep, looking like your thirty-something self isn’t the goal once there are 50 candles on the cake. Instead, it’s all about creating the best version of yourself.

So how do you go about it? With a helping hand from the latest skincare treatments, products and gadgets. We asked three women to road-test a ground-breaking serum, an expert anti-ageing make-up routine and a skin-boosting tool, and to share their honest opinions. Here’s how they got on…

‘My lines look so much softer’

Morag Bell, 60, from Cheshire, swapped her go-to serum for the new N°7 Lift & Luminate TRIPLE ACTION Serum

‘When you get to 60, people tend to typecast you, but I feel exactly the same as I did 40 years ago. It’s your body that gets older, rather than your mind. I think it’s empowering to feel comfortable in your own skin. Yes, I dye my hair and I wear stylish clothes, but that’s because I like making the most of myself, not because I’m chasing after my youth.

When it comes to beauty, I’ve always believed that if you look after your skin, it shows. I’ve never been interested in fillers or Botox to try to make myself look younger, but I’m concerned about wrinkles and firmness. So my skincare regime includes using a serum, followed by a moisturiser.

Why do I need a serum?

Serums contain a high concentration of active ingredients and help tackle specific concerns. N°7 Lift & Luminate TRIPLE ACTION Serum is clinically proven to target wrinkles, a lack of firmness and uneven skin tone.

What’s it got in it?

The hero ingredient is Matrixyl 3000 Plus, which improves the ‘springs’ in skin to help keep it plump and smooth. It also contains a natural skin lightener, Emblica, which works with vitamin C to tackle uneven pigmentation, plus hibiscus and hyaluronic acid to help boost moisturisation and leave skin feeling firmer.

How should I use it?

Apply it underneath your day or night cream, so the active ingredients are delivered as close as possible to the skin. Take it right down to your décolletage, and rub any excess on the backs of your hands, as it will deliver benefits there, too.

That’s why I welcomed the chance to try the new No7 Lift & Luminate TRIPLE ACTION Serum – and I wasn’t disappointed. I used it every morning and night, after cleansing with my hot-cloth cleanser but before moisturising, applying it with my fingers in circular motions to my face and neck. I absolutely loved the serum – it made my skin more radiant within days, and after just two weeks my friends and family were saying how great I looked.

I don’t always use foundation, so it was fantastic that the serum helped my skin glow without it! My lines definitely appeared less noticeable, while the one deep wrinkle I have under my eye has really softened. I’ve told all my friends about it, and they can’t wait to get their hands on it, too!’

Rebecca

‘It’s me – but better!’

Rebecca Tanqueray, 51, from London, put make-up artist Chase Aston’s top anti-ageing tips to the test

‘I don’t think I look too bad for my age, but that’s not to say I don’t look different at 51. The area around my eyes is soft and crinkly, making it impossible to wear the make-up I used to.

Chase showed me how a base of CC cream gives a more radiant finish, while smoothing skin and helping reduce the appearance of redness. It made my skin look fresh, and didn’t settle into creases like a heavy foundation can. To “de-age” my skin further, he suggested using a highlighting stick on prominent points – cheekbones, bridge of the nose, browbones and chin – for a youthful glow.  To combat midday shine, he advised applying a mattifier, which, unlike a powder, doesn’t highlight lines. Curling lashes also lifts the eye area, as does applying mascara only to the top lashes. All these clever tips and applications made a difference.

But the best thing I’ve learnt? Our brows get sparser as we age, so filling them in and blending highlighter on my browbone helps frame my face, making me look younger. Now I feel really natural rather than made-up. I just look like a better version of myself!’

Hina

‘Now my complexion looks so healthy’

Hina Prior, 47, from Middlesex, added HoMedics Radiance Microdermabrasion
to her evening regime

‘I’m quite comfortable with getting older, but that doesn’t stop me from moaning about my skin at times! I’m lucky that it’s smooth, but the things that bug me are dullness, age marks and dark circles. I look tired all the time – even though I don’t feel it!

I’m fairly low-key when it comes to beauty. I’ve been known to wash my face with shower gel and I barely moisturise! But I was keen to try the exfoliation device to see if it really made any difference. I was sceptical, but after using it on my face and neck for five minutes every other evening, I started to see an improvement almost straight away. My skin looked healthier – even my husband noticed.

I’m still using it regularly (sometimes while watching TV, as it feels quite therapeutic!). I prefer to use it in the evenings, to allow time for any redness to fade.

Now we’re seeing more older women in the media, I think perceptions of beauty are changing. I know I’ll never look thirty-something again but I don’t want to. I want to look as good as I can, with lovely skin, and this gadget is helping me do just that.’
