RETINOL, dubbed the ‘gold standard’ in anti-ageing by dermatologists, ‘can help reduce the appearance of hyperpigmentation, lines and wrinkles’, says Sanctuary Spa’s Nichola Joss. It can increase skin’s sensitivity to the sun, though, so apply it before bed and slather on SPF come dawn.
Find it in: La Roche-Posay Redermic Anti-Aging Concentrate, £29.50/2,950 points (30ml).
HYALURONIC ACID is a component of your body’s connective tissue that helps maintain the skin’s strength and elasticity. ‘It can retain over 1,000 times its weight in water, so is great at keeping skin looking hydrated and supple,’ explains Dr Anjali Mahto, Vichy Cosmetics dermatologist.
Find it in: Hylamide Booster Low-Molecular HA Serum £18/1,800 points (30ml); Eisenberg Lifting Regenerating Serum £50/5,000 points (30ml). Boots Exclusive
GLYCERIN tends to be the main agent in most moisturisers. ‘It’s a humectant, so grabs and holds onto water,’ says Boots skincare scientific advisor Dr Mike Bell. In our moisture-sapping environment (think weather and central heating), glycerin protects our defence barrier and sees off scaly skin.
Find it in: Garnier Miracle Wake Up Cream £12.99/1,299 points, (50ml); Botanics All Bright Hydrating Night Cream £4.99/499 points (50ml). Boots Exclusive
GLYCOLIC ACID is an alpha hydroxy acid (or AHA), which helps ‘dissolve the little links between surface skin cells to boost the skin’s natural renewal process’, explains Dr Bell. It can also soften shallow wrinkles, but must be used with UV protection – try <Soltan Sensitive Face Cream SPF50+ £6/600 points (50ml). Boots Exclusive
Find it in: Vichy Normaderm Anti-Age Anti-Imperfection Anti-Wrinkle Resurfacing Care, £15.50/1,550 points (50ml); Sanctuary Spa 5 Minute Radiance Peel Off Mask £10/1,000 points (75ml). Boots.com only
SALICYLIC ACID (or BHA), ‘lightly exfoliates, reducing the build-up of skin cells in sebum-producing pores. This helps prevent them blocking, which causes spots and skin blemishes’, says Dr Bell. Again, finish with a good SPF.
NIACINAMIDE can help to boost collagen levels and strengthen the skin’s natural barrier. ‘This helps even out skin tone and reduces facial sebum production – which is good if you’re blemish prone,’ says Dr Anjali Mahto.
