Way to glow

This summer’s tans are soft, subtle and, most importantly, look like your own…

    The natural bronze

‘For a subtle sheen, mix fake tan with your daily moisturiser to gradually build colour over a week,’ advises St. Tropez expert Jules Heptonstall. Then create a lit-from-within luminosity using a radiance-boosting primer and bronzer applied where the sun naturally hits your face. ‘Use YSL Les Sahariennes Bronzing Stones, £31/3,100 points (10g), to draw a stripe from the apple of one cheek, across your nose to the other cheek, and blend with a brush,’ says YSL’s Fred Letailleur. ‘Then tap a highlighter over cheekbones, nose and cupid’s bow to reflect light.’ Finish with a glossy lip oil, such as Clarins Instant Light Lip Comfort Oil in Honey, £19/1,900 points (7ml).

    The high-gloss tan

‘To take your glow to the next level, it’s all about shimmery, glossy skin,’ says Jules. ‘Apply an oil-free moisturiser to your hands, elbows and feet, to avoid blotchy marks, then mix a little of the same moisturiser with St. Tropez Self Tan Express Bronzing Mousse, £33/3,300 points (200ml), on the back of a tanning mitt. Sweep on using light strokes, and rinse after an hour. Blend Nuxe Huile Prodigieuse, £28/2,800 points (100ml), down shins and across your collarbone and shoulders for a sheer, gleaming finish.’ A touch of shimmer on your face will complete the look – we like Seventeen Instant Glow Shimmer Brick in Gold Bronze Boots Exclusive, £4.99/499 points.

    The gentle radiance

No one wants skin that screams ‘I came from a bottle!’ – early summer calls for a light veil of barely-there colour. ‘The key to a natural finish is to exfoliate first to remove oil and dead skin cells,’ says Sandra Vaughan of Fake Bake. Choose a lotion that has a colour guide, such as Fake Bake Flawless Darker Self-Tan Liquid, £25/2,500 points (170ml), and don’t be put off if you’re fair, as the clever formula adjusts to your skin to develop the right colour. ‘Using the soft side of a mitt for your body and tanning gloves for your face, apply the lotion in a circular motion. Rinse after six hours, and apply an oil-free moisturiser to keep skin hydrated.’
